Scale in the steam boiler or a sticking vacuum breaker usually does this on dual-boiler machines. We check the element, boiler and valves, then descale or replace parts. Open the wand for a few seconds before steaming to purge condensed water first.
A hardened group gasket stops the portafilter sealing, so water escapes around the basket. We fit a new gasket and shower screen and check the solenoid. On three-way-valve machines, backflush with espresso machine detergent first; it often clears a sticky valve.
An airlock after the tank ran dry is the usual cause, though a worn pump or blocked solenoid gives the same symptom. We test pump output and clean the solenoid. Fill the tank, open the steam knob and run the pump until water flows from the wand.
Very pure RO water, a scaled probe or a failing level sensor can all make the machine think the boiler is empty. We clean the probe, test the sensor and check your water. Try a blend of RO and filtered tap water before booking.
Often the machine simply hasn't heated through; an E61 group needs around 20 to 25 minutes after switch-on. If it stays sour, we check the temperature setting, element and grinder. Give it a full warm-up and one step finer on the grind first.
