Most De'Longhi faults come from the brewing unit, the milk system or scale. Here is what we see and how we deal with it.
Grinds but little or no coffee comes out
When a Magnifica or Dinamica grinds normally but delivers a dribble, old grounds are usually packed into the brewing unit or the coffee spout. We remove, wash and lubricate the brewing unit, clear the spout and check the grind setting. If you can remove the brewing unit yourself, rinsing it under warm water often restores flow until we can visit.
Brewing unit won't come out or go back in
If the brewing unit is stuck or refuses to seat, it is often out of its home position. We reset it safely and inspect the drive and guides, instead of forcing it and breaking the housing. Switching the machine off and on so it completes its start-up routine sometimes returns the unit to position by itself.
Descale light stays on
The descale indicator stays lit when a descaling cycle was interrupted or the water hardness setting is wrong. We run a complete descale, check the hardness setting and confirm the indicator clears. Using a descaler other than the one specified in the manual can also leave deposits that bring the light back quickly.
LatteCrema carafe not frothing
On Dinamica, PrimaDonna and Eletta models, weak or no froth usually means dried milk in the carafe's frothing head or tube, or a worn seal at the connector. We strip and clean the carafe system and replace seals that no longer grip. Running the carafe's clean function after every milk drink prevents most of these blockages.
Coffee weak or watery
Watery coffee can come from a grind that is too coarse, too little coffee per cup, or a brewing unit that no longer compresses the grounds properly. We adjust grind and aroma settings and test the brewing unit. Pre-ground coffee added to the bypass doser in large amounts can also produce a watery cup.
Water under the machine
Leaks usually start at the drip tray, the water tank seal or the brewing unit seals. We find the exact point, replace the worn seal and leak-test. Check first that the drip tray and grounds container are seated fully, because a misaligned tray is the most common cause.
Grinder noisy or not grinding
A grinding noise with no coffee often means beans are bridging in the hopper or a foreign object has reached the burrs. We clear the grinder and check the burrs and motor. Never put pre-ground coffee or caramelised beans in the bean hopper, as both can jam the grinder.
Dedica not building pressure
The Dedica's pump and thermoblock work hard in a compact body. Low pressure is usually a clogged filter basket, a worn portafilter seal or scale in the thermoblock, which we check in that order. Using the pressurised filter basket supplied with the machine also helps if your coffee is ground coarser than espresso.
La Specialista grinder or tamper faults
La Specialista models have a built-in grinder and tamping lever. Dosing problems or a stiff lever usually come from coffee build-up in the grinder or tamping mechanism, which we clean and adjust. Adjusting the grind one step at a time, while the grinder is running, avoids straining the motor.
Machine shows a general alarm
Some De'Longhi models show a general alarm when something prevents a normal cycle, from a missing drip tray to an internal fault. We check the simple causes first, then the sensors and wiring. Note which symbols are lit when it appears; that information shortens the diagnosis considerably.
